Sutton on the Forest WW2 Memorial

Sutton on Forest War MemorialThis war memorial is quite recent. It was placed here in memory of both RAF and Canadian Airforce staff based at the many airfields that existed near here in World War 2.

The village of Sutton on the Forest is select. Post card material. Everyone looks after their bit of the village and it’s a patchwork of neatly trimmed lawns which reach right down to the road, and stone houses, although this end is more modern.

The next stop is Huby and then the climb.

Between Strensall and Sutton on the Forest

Poppy fieldsSwallows dip across my path, a stoat jumps out from the verge and leaps back again when it sees my bike. I’m training again for the sponsored ride next month and sending pictures to the blog from the roadside.

This is familiar country for me. The roads north of York are mainly quiet, flat and pass through pleasant villages. Today I’m cycling to Easingwold. It’s only ten miles on the main road but this route winds along 18 miles of country roads. This shot came after leaving Strensall about 9 miles into the ride.

Spread Firefox | Download Day 2008

Sounds like a good deal, right? All you have to do is get Firefox 3 during Download Day to help set the record for most software downloads in 24 hours – it’s that easy. We’re not asking you to swallow a sword or to balance 30 spoons on your face, although that would be kind of awesome.

OK so I’m a confirmed Safari user but Firefox is my backup and it’s one in the eye for MS Explorer which I despise. The idea of pledging to do nothing except download the new version of Firefox is novel – but over 68,000 people in the UK have pledged. That’s more than 0.1% of the population. Kind of awesome ……

Training route to Castle Howard

I have started a training schedule to be ready for the sponsored ride on July 7th. This morning I rode 30 miles to Castle Howard and back on a circular route. York -> Haxby -> Strensall -> Flaxton -> Foston -> Castle Howard -> Bulmer -> Sheriff Hutton -> Strensall -> Huntington -> York.  I chose this route today because there are a few steepish hills on the route – though nothing like the one’s I’ll encounter in the Yorkshire Dales

If the picture looks odd – I was trying to use my iPhone backwards – not easy and I am sort of squinting at the sun and scowling at the phone. I’ve set up ShoZu so that I can email pictures straight to this blog – although the formatting may be odd until I can logon to the site from a computer to sort it out.
